Cool boy's room in the attic: color inspiration & wallpaper ideas

Decorating a boy's room requires smart choices: you want a space that can withstand wear and tear, that encourages creativity and play, and where your son truly feels at home. In a unique space like an attic room, with sloped ceilings and high walls, creating a cozy space can be an especially fun challenge!

For five-year-old James, a Tuk Makeover transformed his unique, high-ceilinged attic bedroom into a boy's dream. He and his little brother Duke sleep under the roof of Arjanne and Stijn's house, a space that called for a clever layout and surprising color combinations. In this blog post, we delve into the paint and wallpaper inspiration behind this cool boy's room and how you can incorporate this color palette into your own home.

Paint colors for a cool boy's room

For the base of James's room, Elina chose our favorite shade of beige: Crunch . Crunch is the ideal beige that doesn't contain too many red tones, making it the perfect base for a boy's room. This neutral shade creates a perfect backdrop that beautifully showcases both natural materials and colorful toys. The deeper, blue-green shade Bonne Nuit was chosen for the wall with the window. This colour not only adds depth, but also creates a sense of security, which is especially nice in an attic room with a lot of height.

The color palette was given extra impact by the use of the light blue shade Foggy —a fresh, soft blue that beautifully echoes the molding between the wallpaper and the homemade desk and Ikea Pax wardrobe. Foggy balances the heavier and warmer colors, giving the whole space a light and playful feel.

Wallpaper as an eye-catcher: dare to combine

One of the biggest assets in James's room is the use of wallpaper. By cleverly utilizing the height of the wall, two different types of wallpaper from Studio Ditte were chosen:

Top: the Whale wallpaper , with a playful, illustrative pattern in soft blue tones.

At the bottom: Caramel stripes , which give the room warmth and rhythm.

A decorative molding, subtly painted in our light blue Foggy, was placed between the two strips to create a natural transition. The result is a wall with character, dynamism, and tranquility – ideal for a child's room that invites exploration without overwhelming.

Smart layout and atmospheric colours

Besides color, the furnishings also play a major role in how a room feels. In James's room, a mid-height sleeper was chosen – ideal for utilizing height without blocking too much light. A play bench was placed under the sloped ceiling, effortlessly transforming from a bench to a hut to a bouncy castle. The large IKEA Pax wardrobe was cleverly updated with a built-in desk, painted entirely in Foggy .

The color palette—ranging from warm caramel to fresh blue-green—gives this room a cool, fresh, and timeless feel. It's not a standard boy's room with bright colors or themes that quickly become boring, but a balanced space that can grow with James in the coming years.

Tips for paint colors and wallpaper in your own boy's room

Want to get creative with color in a boy's room? Here are our top tips:

  • Work in layers: combine wall paint with wallpaper and also give furniture or accessories a coat of paint. This creates a rich, well-thought-out color palette.
  • Dare to use dark colors: a deep shade like Bonne Nuit can add a lot of warmth and atmosphere, especially when combined with lighter or neutral colors.
  • Choose timeless: avoid overly trend-sensitive colors or shapes. Instead, choose natural shades with character, like Crunch or Foggy, which will stay beautiful for years to come.
